Berlin is the largest student city in Germany with more than 200,000 students and has a total of four universities, five universities of applied sciences and more than 30 privately-run academies. The "Berlin University Alliance" of Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Technische Universität Berlin and Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin was recognized as an Excellence Alliance.

With its internationally renowned technical colleges, Berlin is also the most popular location for science for foreign students: 24 percent of the students come from abroad, most of them from China, India and Turkey, among others. Women make up 52 percent of all students in Berlin.
