BEW Berliner Energie und Wärme

BEW Berliner Energie und Wärme has been one of Berlin’s state-owned companies since May 2024.

We currently supply the equivalent of around 1.4 million residential units in the capital reliably and conveniently with climate-friendly district heating. Our expertise and our day-to-day work include heat, cooling and electricity generation as well as the transformation of our generation plants towards a climate-neutral supply. We are also responsible for the sale and distribution of our district heating, district cooling and individual, decentralized solutions. Our district heating network is over 2,000 kilometers long, making it the largest district heating network in Western Europe.

By 2022, we had already reduced our annual CO2 emissions by 65% compared to 1990. A key milestone in 2017 was the phase-out of lignite use. We have also set ourselves the goal of phasing out the use of hard coal by 2030. Heat generation from hard coal is being replaced by a combination of the use of residual heat, biomass and natural gas as heat sources as well as the use of efficient power-to-heat systems, large heat pumps and heat storage systems. The next step will be to complete the decarbonization of district heating as far as possible.

Our decarbonization roadmap sets out clear measures to achieve this goal.
